Wetsuit Fit & Care Questions

How do I put the wetsuit on?

Please refer to our advice section page where you will find some video and text guides to help you.

My wetsuit feels too tight and/or uncomfortable. What should I do?

A wetsuit is a tight fit and should feel snug especially when you put on for the first time. Then when you get into the water the suit should feel comfortable as the neoprene softens and the wetsuit expands. If its too loose and baggy, the wetsuit wont perform at its best and is likely to let in water.

For tips on sizing and how to put your wetsuit on, check out our advice section page

How do I care for my wetsuit?

Taking care of your wetsuit is highly advised as you may be charged if its damaged.

For tips on how to look after your wetsuit please refer to our fit & care page.

Do I need a wetsuit?

Wetsuits are encouraged in nearly all open water swims. It will not only keep you warm but it will also help you swim faster. A wetsuit provides you with extra buoyancy across the backside and down the back of your thighs. This keeps you higher in the water…the higher you are the faster you swim. It will aid your swim immensely and help if you start to tire.

It is COMPULSORY to wear a wetsuit if the water temp = less than 14 degrees.

It is OPTIONAL to wear a wetsuit water temp = between 14 degrees and 22 degrees (i.e. you can choose whether to wear one or not).

Wetsuits are BANNED if the Water temp = above 22 degrees.

Why do I need a triathlon specific wetsuit?

A triathlon wetsuit is designed for open water swimming. Do not be tempted to hire a surfing or water-skiing wetsuit; they do not do the same job! The flexibility around the arms of a tri specific wetsuit is incredible and will not impede your swimming.

A triathlon wetsuit fits extremely closely! Novice’s initial reaction when putting their wetsuit on is that it is too tight on the chest. Any tightness will immediately disappear as soon as you enter the water. If the wetsuit is comfortable on the land then the chances are that it is too big for you and will scoop up water when you start to swim.

Practising in a wetsuit in the weeks prior to the race is very important and will alleviate any fears you may have and will also allow you time to practise in it.

What do I wear underneath a wetsuit?

You should wear under your wetsuit whatever you will complete the rest of the race in. Remember nudity in the transition area will result in disqualification! You can race in any clothing you feel comfortable in, and most competitors wear cycling shorts or a swim costume which they will keep on for the duration of the race. Everything will dry very quickly when you start the cycle.

Can I wear a wetsuit in a pool?

We do not recommend swimming in a chlorinated pool with your wetsuit; in fact, swimming in a chlorinated pool with your wetsuit will void the warranty and return/ exchange policy. Chlorine accelerates the deterioration of the gluing on wetsuits.

Are the wetsuits clean & hygienic?

Yes all of our wetsuits and thoroughly cleaned. We set ourselves incredibly high standards in hygiene and wetsuit care.
